America fails the test

In my lat post I lamented the stupidity of the American people as evidenced by the results of the presidential election. That post was one of my feeble attempts at being witty so was kept as short as possible. In conversations I had that day and in the days following, I blamed the gullibility and ignorance of today’s youth for allowing the wrong party to win this election. Turns out I was right.

During 2006 and 2007, the Intercollegiate Studies Institute tested the civil literacy of students and faculty alike at educational institutions across America. Of the more than 14,000 students tested, more than 50 percent of freshmen and 54 percent of seniors failed the 60-question test.
In 2008, the test was shrunk to 30 questions, but the demographics of those tested were expanded. In all, 2,508 Americans took the test with an average score of 49 percent. Educators scored an average of 55 percent. College graduates did moderately better at 57 percent, while high school graduates showed an abysmal 44 percent.

Mr. Obama’s campaign did an excellent job of garnering the support of Americans 18 – 30 years old. Unfortunately, that group of people, and the people who are supposed to be teaching them, knows very little about our system of government or its history. The results of that test also show they know very little about economics and free enterprise, one of the major components of the election.

Having only ignorance, they easily believed the lies and false hope of the Obama campaign.
I didn’t do as well as I’d hoped on the test – 78.79 percent. Try it for yourself here:

Be very afraid.

Today is a dark day in American history. The masses have proven themselves, if not stupid, then certainly gullible.

Is this a joke?

I’m not even sure what to say about this. Part of me just wants to laugh at the absurdity of it; part of me is pissed off.

I wish I knew just what was going through his mind when he put that t-shirt on so I could better define how ridiculous he looks. It would almost make sense if he were on a Marine base playing basketball with a group of Marines. But then I think you’d be hard pressed to find a Marine who would willingly give him a t-shirt.

The closest thing this man has to military experience is maybe watching Full Metal Jacket when he was in college, but I’m pretty sure the crowd he ran with back then would have frowned on that. It’s heartbreaking that he may indeed be our next commander in chief.

I’m pissed because, while uniform regulations obviously apply only to actual uniform items, you don’t wear it unless you’ve earned it. Exceptions being wives and girlfriends; they look sexy in our t-shirts. With zero affiliation with any branch of the military, let alone the Marine Corps, where does he get off wearing that?

He didn’t earn the title, and he’s not going to earn respect by posing.

What is a windfall?

so·cial·ism –noun
  1. a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.
  2. procedure or practice in accordance with this theory.
  3. (in Marxist theory) the stage following capitalism in the transition of a society to communism, characterized by the imperfect implementation of collectivist principles.

Exxon Mobil last week reported the highest ever quarterly profit. El Presidente wannabe wants to take a good portion of that profit and give it to the community in the form of more “stimulus” checks. The “windfall” tax. With a profit margin less than two points above the industry standard, where is the windfall? If it’s a 10% profit margin that defines windfall, the majority of American corporations would fall prey to this idiocy. The Illinois Senator said the government would take “a reasonable share” of the major oil companies’ profits. Who decides what a reasonable share is?

During the five previous years, Exxon gave up nearly $65 billion in taxes. Their after-tax earnings for the same period were roughly $19 billion less than that. It sounds to me like their reasonable share has been taken.

Mr. Obama claims concern for the American pocket in its battle against $4/gallon gasoline. What happens when he steals even more from the oil companies and they pass that cost of business on to the consumer? $5 or $6/gallon gas will wipe out a $500 stimulus check and then some.

Obama and his cadre of useful idiots don’t like the oil companies because they make capitalism work. They have defined “windfall profit” as any profit made by an entity they don’t like. In order for them to have the government they want, they desperately need the people to be beholden to them. So they make themselves to be heroes by stealing from the big bad oil companies so they can toss a few bucks to the common folk. This is socialism. Socialism is evil.

So why am I so riled up about an idea that could put as much as $1000 in my pocket? I’m riled because that is not the government’s job. It’s not the government’s job to “fix” the economy. It’s not the government’s job to decide how much money a company can make before they’ve made too much. The government’s job is to make sure my country’s borders are safe against enemies, and not much else.

American individuals and corporations already have their income redistributed at near criminal levels. What the government needs to do is STOP SPENDING. Stop doling out entitlements to those who are unwilling to earn their keep. It’s my job to feed and house myself and my family, not the government’s.

There is no greater example in this country of fraud, waste and abuse than the government. Obama would be better of offering a plan to clean up that mess. If whoever our next president ends up being would simply cut the waste from government, the idea of more tax, windfall or otherwise, would be moot.

But Obama won’t do that. He actually wants a nanny state. What scares me is that enough Americans will buy his hype, and that’s all it is, to put him in office. How happy are they going to be when he and his congress start taxing not just Big Oil, but their family’s windfall?

I wish I could vote for Forest Gump

The liberal blogs and columns today and over the weekend are all full of heartache and whining about McCain’s campaign of “character assassination” ads against Obama, all the while spewing their own vile verbal abuse toward McCain. Whatever; let them fight. The thing of it is, Obama’s character needs to be assassinated. Before you get your panties in a bunch, I said his character, not him.
To be honest, I’m not real excited about the prospect of President McCain. But I’m absolutely terrified of the idea of President Obama. I wish I could vote for Forest Gump.
Obama is a man who wants to build an already bursting at the seams government into something even bigger, more controlling and more invasive. He wants to be at the helm of a machine that will give, give, and give some more to those who have not and will not lift a finger to earn. And the only way he can do all that giving is by taking away from those of us who do earn. He wants to tell you which doctor you can go to and what kind of car you can drive. You think your doctors and cars are expensive now?
Democrats, liberals, left wingers, whatever you want to call these useful idiots, are all yapping about the Republican’s decimation of the Constitution with the wire tapping and habeas corpus and whatnot. Will someone please explain to me which part of the Constitution dictates the federal government’s authority to establish universal healthcare? They’re upset that someone listened to a bunch of phone calls without asking permission. How many American lives did that cost? Zero. How many American lives will it cost when ‘free’ healthcare for everyone has driven the cost of that care beyond tolerable limits? When emergency rooms are so packed with non-earning illegal immigrants that earning Americans can’t get in?
How many American lives does it cost to have an enemy combatant, a man who put bullets and bombs downrange to kill Americans, stand a military tribunal and be sentenced to life behind bars, or, preferably, execution? Zero. How many American lives will it cost when that same man is afforded a ‘fair’ trial, a right guaranteed to American citizens, and acquitted on some BS technicality? When he is allowed to return to the battlefield to send more bullets and bombs downrange?
These are things that are already here, and an Obama administration will only bring more. He will take money away from each and every one of us in order to feed his nanny state. Even worse, he will cost American lives.
The man who has preached ‘unity’ and ‘working across the aisle’ recently asked supporters to throw their money toward senate reelections. “We must have a deadlock-proof Democratic majority,” he said. He will not work ‘across the aisle’ or attempt any sort of ‘unity.’ He will fight very hard for a decisive liberal majority that will allow him to move this country further toward socialism. Don’t be fooled by his silver tongue. Look at his actions. He has already hurt America, and plans to hurt us more.

Summer is for flip-flops

On January 14, 2007, El Presidentѐ wannabe said, "We cannot impose a military solution on what has effectively become a civil war. And until we acknowledge that reality, uh, we can send 15,000 more troops; 20,000 more troops; 30,000 more troops. Uh, I don't know any, uh, expert on the region or any military officer that I've spoken to, uh, privately that believes that that is gonna make a substantial difference on the situation on the ground."

Fast forward to two days ago during a visit to those 15, 20 or 30 thousand troops who wouldn't be able to make any "substantial difference...on the ground." The junior senator from Illinois had this to say, "What I said was even at the time of the debate of the surge, was if you put 30,000 troops in, of course it’s going to have an impact. There’s no doubt about that."

Suck up all you want Mr. Obama, you're not getting the military's vote.

El Presidente

“Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English—they’ll learn English—you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish.” —el presidential candidito Barack Obama.

Say what? This is the yahoo the democrats want to put in the White House? Is he already conceding defeat to our southern neighbors, ready to give to them our unique American heritage?

Last Saturday, some ditz made a left-hand turn in front of me and I hit them, wrecking a good portion of the front of my Jeep. Not one word of English was available from any of the three occupants of the car I hit. We had to wait for a second police officer who spoke Spanish before anything productive could be accomplished.

They'll learn English only when politicians quit pandering for votes and start doing their jobs - solving the country's problems. One of the biggest problems we as Americans face is the refusal on the part of immigrants to assimilate and truely become Americans.

Press '1' for what?

Last night I made a bunch of phone calls to credit card companies to cancel cards I haven't used in years. Each call was initally answered by a woman who sounds like she lives in a soup can. Invariably, her instructions started off with some form of the message, "Thank you for calling [insert bank name here.] For English, press one, para Espanol..." I hate that.

What the message should say is, "If you are calling from the United States, press one, si llama de otro país...." Then you press one and you get to speak to someone in English.

Photoshop in Iran? Who knew?

Seem the Iranians aren't spending all their time trying to make nuclear weapons, or whatever it is they do in those nuclear weapon making facilities over there. At least some time was spent recently testing a few missles that may eventually carry nuclear weapons, or not. Here's the photo from Sepah News (the media arm of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards):

This photo was picked up and reprinted by just about every major news outlet yesterday and today. By the time someboday paid attention and figured out that one of the missles (#3 from the left) was a fake, the Sepah Website had replaced it with this one:

I did some more digging around to see if I could find just what it was theose wacky Iranians were trying to do with their digital trickery. Did they not want us to see that one of their missles needed a shot of Cialis? Or did they think the sight of four missles soaring skyward would be more imposing than three? Here's what i found:

To emulate whom?

“It is a paradoxical truth that tax rates are too high and tax revenues are too low and the soundest way to raise the revenues in the long run is to cut the rates now... Cutting taxes now is not to incur a budget deficit, but to achieve the more prosperous, expanding economy which can bring a budget surplus.”

This is something I would love to hear a President of the United States say. Imagine my surprise in discovering it actually was a President who said it -- the 35th.

I have often heard Barack Obama compared to John F. Kennedy. I can only hope that if elected, he will hold to, and act on, this paradoxical truth.

As for hope and change we can believe in, I sincerely hope that if elected, Obama will eventually be able to be compared to another President and be able to echo him when he said, "We cut tax rates, reduced government regulation, and restrained Federal spending; and we unleashed the creativity of individuals and businesses. We gave them freedom to create; to keep the rewards of their own risk-taking and hard work; and to reach for new, bold ideas." -- Ronald Reagan

I'm not holding my breath though, Mr. Obama's bent toward socialism will undoubtedly quash Reagan's dream of "A shining city upon a hill.

An Old Fence

I took some painkillers a while ago. I don't really like taking them because they make my mind a bit fuzzy at times. A few minutes ago I found myself out in the back yard staring at the old fence I'm in the process of replacing and suddenly it looked pretty neat. So I took some pictures of it.

Another really stupid thing for someone to say....

“Because he’s African-American. Because he’s a black man, who has come from a place of oppression and repression through the years in our own country... President Obama [would be] a symbol of empowerment [who has] the ability to help us bridge the divide of religious extremism, to maybe even give power to moderate Islam... an important lesson for America to show Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, other places in the world where disenfranchised people don’t get anything.” -- Jean-Francois Kerry on Barack Obama's qualifications for the office of President of the United States.

WHAT? That's what it takes to be POTUS? How DO these idiots get into office in the first place?

M & P

If there's a better dinner out there than this, I want to hear about it.

The cone

Today was the first summer day of spring. It's still above 80 at 6 p.m. I think it hit 86 this afternoon. Was driving around with the top down for a while today -- much fun. Going to see the family and the new guy next weekend, hope it's as nice then.

Planted grass today. In the same place I planted it last year. There are four huge trees in the front yard with what used to be a garden at their feet. I don't do gardens so last spring I pulled everything that was left and planted grass. It grew beautifully for three weeks. Then for reasons I don't understand (neither of my thumbs are green), it all died. In one day. We'll see how it goes this year. Actually, one of my thumbs is kind of green because after I'd planted the grass and raked it under, I covered the whole area with grass clippings from the back yard. Since Home Depot doesn't sell a spreader for fresh cut grass clippings I had to use my hand and it turned the whole thing green.

Ah yes, the cone. Mom and Tom are visiting tomorrow so I'm cleaning the house. Just got done vacuuming and I wanted everyone (or at least the two or three people who might see this post) to see what the vacuum cleaner does to all the dirt (mostly dog hair.) It spins it up into a neat little cone. Isn't that cool?
OK, I've got three pounds of Tri Tip Sirloin that's just about ready to go on the grill. Yum!

Mr. Hayden, If you hold such disdain for the United States and for those of us who stand at her gates, why don't you just leave? Take another trip to visit some communist outpost and stay. I'm sure they'd be glad to have you. And bring your ex.
If you have nothing constructive to add to your bile, please stay silent. For everyone's sake, at least voluntarily relegate yourself to obscure references in cartoon sitcoms.

I'm all for freedom of speech, that's why I wear the uniform I do. Quite honestly, I'm just fed up with hearing seemingly educated people like Hayden and his ilk blathering on about how much they hate what's going on without offering any constructive suggestions. Meanwhile, his viralic dissent does nothing but encourage an enemy who would make no distinction between killing him and me. They know they must simply be patient and soon enough, those with less intestinal fortitude and other such sympathizers will eventually allow them to have the run of the playground.

Rule Of Law
I hate to tell you this, since it would probably piss John Bruhns off, put you, sir, are a brainwashed tool. You fight a war Bush tells you to, an enemy he says you should fight. You do not defend the American People, or what WE stand for. You are doing a job, like working at the bank, you just do it with a gun in your hand. And that gun is being used to protect the business interests of multinational companies that have NO loyalty to America! You swore an oath to defend the Constitution--Not to your political masters. And next week when they drum up another conflict, Iran, Venezuela, China maybe, you'll believe the bs they feed you, just like you did this one. The corporate machine runs on the willingness of fools like you to die for them, still believing you are serving your country. Those Muslims don't hate me, or my neighbors. They hate you. You want the war and terrorism to end, I'll give you the answer Hayden can't or won't---Get the hell out of the Middle East! Roll the price of oil back to before Bush invaded Iraq! Buy it on the open market without an army being necessary to threaten any of those countries. You do realized that Jews and Muslims once lived in peace in that region? If they could, we can.

You, too, sir, seem to have an inordinate amount of disdain for the military. But that's OK, we don't mind. We don't do this so that you'll like us, we do it because the majority of people don't have what it takes, we do it so you don't have to. I will, however, invite you to come work at my "bank" for a few days.
It sounds as though you've undergone a bit of brainwashing yourself, to wit: Who said anything about Muslims? Islamic radicals do hate you and your neighbor and would make no distinction between killing you in your bed and me with a gun in my hand. Understand that.
If you understand that then you will understand how, in carrying out my oath to defend "against all enemies, foreign and domestic," it is the domestic enemy that is the most insidious. Those who, knowingly or otherwise, encourage the enemy.
Understand that, too. Your words have the ability to make our enemy feel better about his chances of getting a chance to kill you.

There were three "hero" characters in that movie. Those played by Nicholson and Sutherland for doing everything they believed necessary to ensure their unit was ready to fight should the need arise, and that played by Cruise for standing up and chasing down an illegal action against what was meant to be insurmountable odds.

Montana: Have guns, will secede

It seems as though the good people of Montana are finally getting fed up with the liberal pantywaists in D.C. who are trying to destroy the second amendment to our constitution. (District of Columbia v. Heller)

Thirty-nine of Montana’s elected officials recently signed a resolution which says that if the Supreme Court rules against the individual right of gun ownership, the United States would be in breach of contract, giving their state grounds for leaving the union.

In 1889, when Montana signed its contract of statehood with the United States, one of the conditions was that the federal government agreed that individuals had the right to keep and bear arms. [From the Montana Constitution of 1889: "Right to bear arms. The right of any person to keep or bear arms in defense of his own home, person, and property, or in aid of the civil power when thereto legally summoned, shall not be called in question, but nothing herein contained shall be held to permit the carrying of concealed weapons."] One of the dimwitted arguments in the Heller case is that firearm ownership is just a state or collective right, not a right of the individual. This leans weakly upon the argument that the rights spelled in the second amendment refer solely to the right of the states to build and maintain militia.

Montana Secretary of State Brad Johnson had this to say, “The U.S. would do well to keep its contractual promises to the states that the Second Amendment secures an individual right now as it did upon execution of the statehood contract.” Good for you, Brad.

One way

I bought a webcam yesterday. Just finished installing it (plugging it in) and some pretty cool software that will let me talk to people face to face via the computer. More interesting though is that I don't know anyone else who uses the same service so right now I can only talk to myself. I'm getting good at it.
